Life often feels like a constant battle to keep our heads above water. Many of us move through days just surviving—managing stress, meeting obligations, and pushing through challenges. But what does it really mean to thrive instead of merely survive? Thriving means more than just getting by; it means growing, healing, and finding joy even in difficult times. This post explores the difference between surviving and thriving across mental health, relationships, and career, and offers practical steps to help you shift your mindset. I’ll also share how painting became a powerful tool for healing and transformation in my own life.

Understanding the Difference Between Surviving and Thriving

Surviving is about coping. It’s the bare minimum we do to keep functioning when life feels overwhelming. Thriving is about flourishing. It means feeling energized, connected, and purposeful. The difference shows up in many areas:

  • Mental health: Surviving might look like managing anxiety or depression just enough to get through the day. Thriving means developing resilience, self-awareness, and emotional balance.

  • Relationships: Surviving relationships often involve tolerating conflict or loneliness. Thriving relationships are built on trust, communication, and mutual support.

  • Career: Surviving at work means meeting deadlines and avoiding burnout. Thriving means finding meaning, growth, and satisfaction in what you do.

Recognizing where you are on this spectrum is the first step toward change.

Mental Health: Moving Beyond Survival

Many people live with stress, anxiety, or grief that keeps them in survival mode. When I faced a period of intense loss and health struggles, I found myself trapped in a cycle of worry and exhaustion. Painting became my refuge, a way to express feelings I couldn’t put into words.

Practical tips to shift your mental health from surviving to thriving:

  • Create a safe space for expression. Whether through art, journaling, or talking with a trusted friend, find ways to process emotions.

  • Practice small acts of self-care daily. This could be a short walk, deep breathing, or a moment of mindfulness.

  • Seek professional support when needed. Therapy or counseling can provide tools to build resilience.

  • Set boundaries. Protect your energy by saying no to what drains you.

These steps helped me move from feeling overwhelmed to feeling more in control and hopeful.

Relationships: Building Connections That Nourish

Survival in relationships often means avoiding conflict or settling for less than you deserve. Thriving relationships require effort but bring deep satisfaction.

How to foster thriving relationships:

  • Communicate openly and honestly. Share your needs and listen actively.

  • Invest time and attention. Quality time strengthens bonds.

  • Practice forgiveness and patience. Everyone makes mistakes; growth comes from understanding.

  • Surround yourself with supportive people. Seek connections that uplift and encourage you.

I found that sharing my creative journey with close friends opened new doors for connection and understanding, enriching my relationships.

Career: Finding Purpose Beyond the Paycheck

Many people survive in their jobs by focusing on tasks and deadlines without feeling fulfilled. Thriving at work means aligning your career with your values and passions.

Steps to move toward a thriving career:

  • Identify what motivates you. Reflect on what aspects of your work bring joy or meaning.

  • Set goals for growth. Look for opportunities to learn new skills or take on challenges.

  • Create balance. Avoid burnout by managing workload and taking breaks.

  • Connect with colleagues. Building positive relationships at work improves satisfaction.

Integrating Creativity into Daily Life

As a full-time mum to two boys with autism, I have found that incorporating creativity into my daily routine has significantly enhanced my life. Here are some ways creativity has made a positive impact:

  • New Energy: Engaging in creative activities revitalizes my spirit and helps me approach challenges with a fresh perspective.

  • Idea Generation: Creative pursuits often lead to innovative ideas that can be applied to both personal and professional aspects of my life.

  • Stress Relief: Creative expression serves as a therapeutic outlet, reducing stress and promoting emotional well-being.

  • Bonding with My Children: Involving my boys in creative activities fosters connection and provides opportunities for shared experiences.

Ultimately, integrating creativity into my routine not only enriches my life as a mother but also enhances my professional endeavors.

A calm figure drifts in a peaceful expanse of water, her face turned up to a vivid red and purple sky. Overhead, a frame of daisies introduces a hint of nature's purity against the striking colors of the backdrop.

Painting became a healing and creative space to explore emotions and find peace.

How Painting Became a Safe Space for Healing

When I was dealing with health challenges and the loss of loved ones, words often failed me. Painting offered a different language, a way to explore pain, hope, and transformation. The act of mixing colours and creating shapes gave me control and freedom. It was a safe space where I could experiment without judgment.

This creative process helped me:

  • Process grief and loss by externalizing feelings.

  • Build patience and presence through focused attention.

  • Discover joy in creation even during hard times.

  • Connect with myself on a deeper level.

Many people find creative outlets like painting, writing, or music can serve as powerful tools for healing and growth.

Practical Tips to Shift from Surviving to Thriving

Here are some actionable steps to help you move beyond survival and start thriving in your life:

  • Start small. Choose one area-mental health, relationships, or career-and set a simple goal.

  • Create routines that support well-being. Regular sleep, movement, and healthy meals build a foundation.

  • Explore creative outlets. Try painting, drawing, or any form of art that feels accessible.

  • Celebrate progress. Acknowledge small wins to build motivation.

  • Reach out for support. Whether friends, family, or professionals, connection matters.

Remember, thriving is a journey, not a destination. It takes time and patience.
